Your Very Simple Guide to Simple Prayer
This revelation can greatly improve your prayer life. You might feel stuck when you pray and, at times, even confused. Don’t be discouraged. Many Christians have gone through this. I have no doubt that soon you will find your flow in prayer. Prayer at first can feel rigid and forced, but eventually becomes as natural as breathing.
Here’s the revelation that helped me, and I believe it can help you too: prayer is like a river, and in a river there are many streams. There are different aspects to prayer. Once you become aware of these different aspects of prayer, you more easily recognize where the Holy Spirit is leading you.
#1 Adoration
This is worship. A powerful man of God once told me, If you have an hour to pray, worship for 45 minutes. This wasn’t a strict formula he was giving me, just a bit of wisdom about the effectiveness of worship. Worship clears the mind and heart and makes way for your flow in prayer.
"24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth." - John 4:24 (NLT)
#2 Supplication
This is the prayer request. Don’t believe the lies of religious thinking. God desires to bless and prosper you. There’s nothing wrong with bringing Him your everyday needs. In fact, when you present your needs to God, your mind becomes clearer, enabling you to focus better while you pray.
"6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT)
#3 Confrontation
This is spiritual warfare. This is when you pray against the attacks of the enemy in your life and in the lives of your loved ones. Demonic influence is real, and prayer pushes back against that darkness.
"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” - 1 Peter 5:8-9 (NLT)
#4 Contrition
This is repetance. A guilty conscience lacks the faith to approach God in prayer. While I understand that we are born again at the first instance of repentance, we must continually repent, not to earn salvation, but to make the necessary corrections in our thoughts and actions that we might become more and more like Jesus.
"9 Pray like this: 12 and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us." - Matthew 6:9 & 12 (NLT)
#5 Meditation
Add to your prayer life meditation on the Word. Don’t just read the Word - repeat the Word, over and over again, in both thought and speech. Meditation on the Word sets your prayer life ablaze with holy fire. The Word is the fuel for prayer.
"Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2 But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. 3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do." - Psalm 1:1-3 (NLT)
#6 Intercession
Intercession is prayer for others. If God wills it in His Word, you can pray it, and you can pray it over your spouse, children, family, friends, or even your city or nation.
"I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them." - 1 Timothy 2:1 (NLT)
#7 Appreciation
A pastor friend of mine told me, “Thanksgiving is like the send button on our prayers.” Thanksgiving and faith go hand-in-hand. When praying, don’t forget to thank God in faith for what you know He’ll do and also for everything He has done.
"Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name." - Psalm 100:4 (NLT)
