Break Free from Legalism: Salvation by Grace, Not Works
Fear. Shame. Confusion. These are the chains that bind so many believers; not because God put them there, but because of the greatest deception in the church today: the gospel of works.
Paul warned the Galatians with strong language, even calling down a curse on anyone who preached a different gospel (Galatians 1:6–9). What deception was so dangerous that the apostle himself would not soften his words? It was legalism, the attempt to accomplish in human effort what can only be accomplished by God’s grace.
Legalism whispers, “If I just try harder, maybe God will love me more.” It says holiness is misery, that God is impressed with our guilt, that the harder we punish ourselves, the holier we become. It sneaks into our worship: “If I clap loud enough, if I pray long enough, if I read enough chapters of Scripture, then maybe God will accept me.” But Paul confronts this lie head-on: “How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?” - Galatians 3:3 (NLT).
This deception robs believers of their joy. It turns the Christian life into a treadmill of performance - run faster, run harder, yet never arrive. And it leads many to despair, doubting their salvation day by day. One day you feel “holy,” the next you don’t. One day you think heaven is certain, the next you wonder if you’ve fallen away.
But the gospel declares something altogether different: “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it” - Ephesians 2:8–9 (NLT).
True holiness doesn’t come from human striving; it comes from surrender. Grace doesn’t excuse sin; it empowers you to overcome it. Grace is the power to live free, the power to know who you are in Christ: a child of God, seated in heavenly places, righteous because of Jesus.
Don’t let legalism steal what Jesus purchased with His blood. Rest in His finished work. Live in the freedom of His love. And walk worthy of your calling, not so that you can be accepted, but because you already are.
The cross is enough. Always has been. Always will be.
